The FCT Police Command has trained officers on handling guns and managing peaceful and violent protests.
On Wednesday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, officiated the passing out parade of the first batch of trainees from all divisions of the FCT in line with a directive from the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The officers were trained on arms drills, riot drills, stripping and assembling of firearms, especially AK-47s and the GPMG, and ways to handle protests and riots before the arrival of the mobile unit.
While speaking, the CP stated that the training was necessary to bring back ‘the police of old and proficiency to the force’ while urging participants to carry out all they had been taught in their various duty posts.
“This is the end of the two weeks training for officers of the police command, following the directives of the Inspector General of Police that all commissioners of police should go back to their areas and ensure that they conduct periodic retraining of all officers which has been done in the FCT.
“All the officers were taken from various divisions to be trained in different police activities including proficiency in weapons they carry and they have done well.
“With this we have been able to bring back the quick intervention force because these officers will be going back to their various area commands, in case of any happenings these officers will be deployed to quench uprisings or demonstrations before the mobile unit will come to assist,” Disu said.
He also extended his gratitude to the IGP, Kayode Ehbetokun, for the initiative to upgrade the performance of police officers across the country.
A police constable, Emmanuel Butu, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues appreciated the command for granting them the opportunity to acquire more knowledge in the field.
Butu pledged that officers would make good use of the opportunity in the discharge of their duties.
