We’re approaching the one year mark since NetherRealm Studios announced that DLC for Mortal Kombat 11 had wrapped up. NetherRealm Studios made it clear that the studio had moved on to their next project, but details that project remain scarce. Rumor has it that NetherRealm Studios is working on the next entry in the Mortal Kombat series rather than following the pattern of developing an Injustice title after every Mortal Kombat game.
Needless to say, fans have become suspicious of a recent Tweet made by Andrew Bowen, voice actor for Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11. Strangely though, this Tweet has since been deleted.
In Bowen’s now deleted Tweet, we can see a clip posted by Bowen himself. In this clip, the iconic Warner Brothers Water Tower is shown before Bowen points the camera back towards himself where he then gives a curious smile.
As the clip is playing, it sounds like narration from something can be heard in the background. Most notably, the phrases “every deadly technique” and “in savage combat” (or is it “Kombat”?) can be heard.
Though Bowen’s Tweet was deleted, FutureBoyWho managed to capture the clip and post it on his YouTube channel.
Of course, it’s important to mention that this is actually the fourth time that Bowen has posted a clip like this one. He’s apparently been doing this over the course of about a year, beginning in late May 2021.
Speculation suggests that he may have been returning to the Warner Brothers studios to voice act as Johnny Cage for a couple of different projects. It’s believed that Bowen may have voiced lines for Johnny Cage in a theoretical “Mortal Kombat 12” and its base game in a previous trip, and is now possibly voicing dialogue for future DLC — intro banter between Johnny Cage and future characters.
It might come across as odd for NetherRealm Studios to already focusing on DLC, but it’s worth noting that Mortal Kombat 11 was a game that only got announced four to five months before the game was slated to be released.
The possibility that Johnny Cage could be appearing in MultiVersus is also a solid possibility, though we’ve yet to receive confirmation that Mortal Kombat representation is present in the upcoming platform brawler.
What’s particularly odd about all of this is the fact that Bowen’s Tweet was deleted without explanation. Is it possible that Bowen actually made a mistake by releasing this clip on Twitter?
This comes across as being unlikely as Bowen is an experienced voice actor that’s been working in the industry since 1992 — three decades now. It feels like Bowen is choosing his actions very carefully here in that he’s teasing just enough that allows fans to speculate what they want.
It’s been nearly a year, and we’re still waiting on official confirmation for Mortal Kombat 12, Injustice 3 or whatever NetherRealm Studios is working on. Perhaps we’ll learn of Bowen’s involvement sooner rather than later. We’ll just have to keep an eye out for official announcements to find out what’s really going on here.
