The 2023/24 season has had more lows than highs for Manchester United.
Finishing 8th was their lowest ever position in the English Premier League and has turned up the heat on manager Erik ten Hag.
In the previous regime, managers were sacked when it was clear that the club were not going to make it to the UEFA Champions League. David Moyes was sacked as manager when it was mathematically impossible to quality for a top four place and Louis van Gaal was let go despite winning the FA Cup.
So many are wondering whether ten Hag, who has fared worse this season than both of those previous managerial incumbents, will get the same treatment. With new part-owners INEOS in charge of the club, many are wondering if they will look to bring in their own man moving forward.
Football journalist Fabrizio Romano, a man frequently in the know about things, has provided an update on the future of the current United manager.
Writing on his Daily Briefing, Romano has claimed that the FA Cup final will be critical in deciding what happens next with Erik ten Hag.
“At the moment it’s completely open – it’s a 50-50 situation for ten Hag.
“After the Wembley final there will be a decision on the coach, so ten Hag knows how important it will be.”
Romano states that while victory against favourites Manchester City side is not expected, a “proper mentality” on the pitch will influence the club’s position on ten Hag’s suitability for the role.
United will face City this Saturday in a replay of the FA Cup final from last season. An Ilkay Gundogan double sealed the trophy for Pep Guardiola’s side as they ran out 2-1 winners at Wembley as part of their treble winning season.
Erik ten Hag will be sending his men out to stop City repeating the trick and completing a domestic double. Not only will it be crucial for getting another trophy in the bag, but it seems that it could determine the immediate future of both the Dutch manager and Manchester United as a whole.
