Over the past few weeks, Wolves midfielder has been linked to a couple of clubs including Manchester United and Arsenal as reported by O Dia a while back.
According to this particular report, Arsenal had in fact moved ahead of Manchester United in the race for the highly rated 23-year-old midfielder, as they alleged the Gunners were ready to enter negotiations with Wolves.
Speaking on his latest Daily Briefing column, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano shed some light on the whole Gomes situation, addressing both the Arsenal and United links.
Romano made it very clear that the links and reports were not really as concrete as some media outlets may have put it.
“Another player being linked with Arsenal by some outlets is Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes. Of course, it’s normal to see stories like this, and we only recently also saw rumours about Manchester United wanting the Brazil international,” he mentioned in that regard.
According to Romano, the reports linking the young Portuguese to some of the ‘big boys’ in England is still in early stages and nothing concrete in the form of an official approach or offer has been made.
“My understanding remains that there’s still nothing concrete for Gomes at the moment. Every week there’s a new team being linked in the media, almost all of them… he’s being scouted by a number of top clubs as I’ve mentioned before, but nothing has entered into concrete stages yet,” Romano stated, confirming the interest is merely in the scouting stages.
When it came to United, Romano mentioned that United’s seriousness to pursue or approach Gomes would be entirely dependent on what they decide to do in midfield with regard to the Eriksen and Casemiro situations, who may both be leaving.
“With United and Gomes, we’ll have to see what they decide to do in midfield this summer, and much of that should become clearer once they have their new directors and structure in place and decide their strategy for the next transfer window,” he concluded.
