Manchester United’s defence has been an absolute mess this season, conceding goals at will. Heading into the final 6 games, United are currently on -1 goal difference in the Premier League – something unheard of in a United side in late April.
The goal difference alone is absolutely horrendous, but coupled with how easily ten Hag’s team concede shots, and it’s a big, big mess as the whole season has been.
As such, Manchester United have been linked with so many defenders over the past couple of months, especially considering there are some departures expected.
Raphael Varane will be out of contract in June, and it is still unclear if he will be offered a new one on lower wages, which is the very reason there is no assurance he continues beyond June.
One of said defenders who have been linked with United is young Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite who is having a very fine season at Goodison.
caughtoffside as recently as yesterday reported that United were very interested in the young man and a summer move was in the works.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano earlier today confirmed all these rumours and links of young Branthwaite to United on his Daily Briefing column.
“The reality is that it’s still early days on this story – for sure, Branthwaite is appreciated by Man United and is one of three or four names on their shortlist, but we’ll have to wait and see if this develops into anything more,” Romano wrote.
Most reports, including caughtoffside’s were speculating Everton would ask for something around the 70 million pound region and Fabrizio addressed this as well, clearly stating a price had not been set.
“As for Everton’s price, my understanding is that clubs are still waiting to understand Everton’s decision on the asking price,” Romano wrote.
Finally, he set it straight that the number of centre backs United will sign will depend on what happens with Varane.
