Panic gripped people around the Ikeja Under Bridge area in Lagos State on Friday evening following an explosion.
As of the time of filing this report, it remains unclear if there were any casualties resulting from the incident.
THE WHISTLER gathered that the explosion occurred at a building beside Cash & Carry on Kodesho Road, inward on Awolowo Way.
Emergency responders are currently at the scene working to bring the situation under control.
Confirming the incident in a post on X, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) stated that its officers had rerouted traffic from the General Hospital, underneath the bridge.
“An explosion occurred at Kodesho inwards Oba Akran, with @LagosRescue on the ground to ensure safety and put out the fire, preventing any further hazard.
“To ensure the safety of motorists, our men have rerouted traffic from General Hospital underneath the bridge through the Oba Akran Bridge,” LASTMA stated.
A video seen by THE WHISTLER showed a car with shattered glass on the right-hand side. In the video, a woman’s voice could be heard thanking God for saving her life.
“I thought it injured me. Father, I thank you,” she said, as she moved around her car in shock while continuing to express gratitude.
An X user identified as The KVNG (@Teclef) also shared his experience, saying, “I was in the middle of the road, about to cross to the front of the explosion.”
Efforts by our correspondent to reach the spokesperson for the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Mr Nosa Okunbor, were unsuccessful, as he had yet to respond to a message sent to him at the time of filing this report.
