It is no longer news that Calabar was shut down the day before yesterday by disabled persons numbering over 300 from the 18 LGAs of Cross River State. They cited government neglect, insensitivity and uncharitableness as the major reasons for their protest.
I decided to dash in there to find out the state of things. I was told by the leaders that they had sent a delegation to the deputy governor who told them that the governor was not around and that his hands were tied. They were offered N100, 000 which they rejected and headed back to their protest venue. They were by this time visibly exhausted and famished and made me wonder how a government can be this stone-hearted, compassionless and ruthlessly unsympathetic to the plights of its most vulnerable people.
I want to commend Hon. Obun Cletus who made food available for them to eat and rallied round to make sure they were transported back to their destinations. As at the time I departed, there was still no word nor positive feedback from any government official!
From parading with the longest convoy in Africa to having the highest political aides without appointment letters; from using school boy antics to threaten opponents to brazen disregard for the rule of law…How much more embarrassing can this government get?
