Today we’d like to introduce you to Jair Robinson.
It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?
People think my beginnings are as majestic as I am. But truthfully, they are. There is something called eidetic memory, which means someone can recall an image with high precision after seeing it once. I have the same thing when it comes to music. I’m able to hear a song just a few times, then recall it for a lifetime.
Since when The Boi (Jair Robinson referred to himself as “The Boi”) was just a baby around 1 year, I would hum “Whoomp! There It Is”. People would go to my mother and ask, “is he singing Whoomp There It Is.” I have been a musical artist from a young age. So pretty much I grew up doing freestyles and directing films in school. For college, I went to Bradley University to be an electrical engineer to design robots, actually winning robotic competitions, because I’m a nerd obviously. Then I worked in entrepreneurship and Startups till I landed in Research and Development for Stryker primarily designing new audio products for operation rooms. I started my own label, M’Gurl during that time. So my life has been a combination of technology, music, and being an entrepreneur.
I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?
Jair Robinson for World Leader was not a joke, but the song is an aspiration. You see, the biggest challenge has been standards that I set for myself that are too high. This sent me on a journey for perfectionism, which helped me hone my skills, but made it challenging for me to decide what is worthy of releasing, rather than just transmuting the Jair Robinson experience and letting it exist. Being that my calling is to be President one day, I do have to have a sense of perfectionism. My homie Lani Rose (@itslanirose) gave me the simple words, “just let it exist.” This idea has helped me ship the Jair Robinson experience out without the dire need for approval.
Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?
People come to me and ask if I’m a musical artist. Or they ask if I’m an engineer, or a director, or a film actor, or a voice actor. I’m leaning away from such titles, as I’m really just The Experience. The Jair Robinson Experience is one of a kind, and I don’t want to limit it to titles. However, I have a good time collaborating and doing sound design, mixing, and being a feature for others. For Jair Robinson for President, I collaborated with Stooki Sound. I met my boy Thrashkitten, Johnny Darge from The Sooper Swag Project, at a Bradley University show. He has been a tremendous musical mentor over the years and really propelled me since our song Guiro featuring Nnamdi Ogbonnaya and Luscious Duncan. Nnamdi has been crushing it, playing for such festivals as Pitchfork.
Since then, I got to do voice over work with Cédric Steffens, who goes by Canblaster, after meeting him at Ableton Loop in Hollywood, Los Angeles. I had a sit in studio session with mastering engineer Emily Lazar from The Lodge where I learned a lot and she cooked up an early master of my song I Love Me Some Jair Robinson. So simply, I’ve been able to apply what I’ve learned from the greats. I’m humbled.
What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?
My best piece of advice is don’t do anything that Jair Robinson would not do. Listen to Jair Robinson every single day, no matter what. If you have a choice of brushing your teeth, calling your dying grandparent, or listening to Jair Robinson, then it’s obvious what you should do. Brush your teeth, but do so while listening to Jair Robinson. Also, be sure to vote for Jair Robinson for President. This is a guaranteed way to success. Just joking about the dead grandparent, but if you play them Jair Robinson, they might just get revived and start doing the dougie or something. Try it out and let me know.
Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?
Really just being authentically Jair Robinson. I’ve made a lot of mistakes in my life, and a lot of regrets. But I have never regretted not being Jair Robinson, because I always stayed true to myself, and it feels so good knowing that. And this is why I think the people Love them some Jair Robinson. Honestly, I love me some Jair Robinson too. In reality, I guess we all successful, because we all Jair Robinson. I’m just mad I didn’t know the true meaning of success earlier.
What’s next for you?
I have more type freestyles coming out with Acme (@acme.x), my cousin Kyree Anderson from Peoria, Illinois. We both are in Dallas, Texas now after making Nacho Holmes, which was featured on z923 Peoria. I have some more films on the way after being a lead in “Hunted” from Sojourn Productions and “I Want It. I Got It. I Need It.” I also have more work as a film actor, director, voice over artist, sound engineer, and narrator. I really want M’Gurl to get represented by similar artists in Peoria, Dallas, and particularly Deep Ellum. But really, it is to provide the full Jair Robinson Experience on a global scale now. All madness aside, I do hope you enjoy.
