The scholarship scheme of Ntufam John Okon, former Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Chairman in Cross River State, has received commendations from the Lutheran Church of Nigeria, LCN.
The commendation was made by the Presiding Bishop of LCN, Rt. Rev. Daniel Eshiet, on Sunday in Calabar, Cross River State capital, as the elder statesman marked his 70th birthday.
Describing the scholarship scheme as “a passion that cannot be revoked,” Rev. Eshiet said, with its revival, indigent youths would be able to access funds for future educational purposes.
The Bishop, while admonishing other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate Okon, stated that “The church is not only grateful to Elder John Achot Okon but is grateful to God Almighty for sparing his life to reach 70 years”.
Adding that “When he first established the education and scholarship scheme many years ago, so many indigent youths from the church benefited from the scholarship initiated by Elder Okon. He is an elder statesman in the state and could easily walk away from encouraging youths to take advantage of education.
“But his passion in activating the consciousness of youths to having quality education has been burning in him for many years now”.
While encouraging youths in the church to take advantage of the scholarship, Bishop Eshiet counselled that the best key to opening a bright future is through education.
On his part, Ntufam Okon disclosed that he was reviving the Education and Scholarship scheme which he started many years back but had experienced a paucity of funds along the line.
“With how the world is growing, I had to revive the scheme to encourage youths (both within and outside the church) to develop an interest in education”, Okon said as he prayed to God to give him more life and funds to sustain the scheme.
