President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr. Kayode Opeifa as the substantive Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC).
Opeifa, who previously served as Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation under Governor Babatunde Fashola, brings a wealth of experience in transportation management to his new role.
His appointment follows his past contributions to resolving the notorious Apapa port gridlock, where he served as Vice-Chairman of the Presidential Task Team (PTT) under former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.
The task force was instrumental in addressing the long-standing congestion issues at Lagos ports.
Opeifa takes over from Ben Iloanusi, who served in an acting capacity after the departure of former NRC MD, Fidet Okhiria, in October 2024 upon the completion of his second four-year tenure.
During his tenure as Lagos Commissioner for Transportation, Opeifa spearheaded key initiatives that transformed the state’s transport system, earning recognition for modernizing traffic management and positioning Lagos as a model for urban transportation in Africa.
His achievements led to his appointment by former President Muhammadu Buhari as Transport Secretary for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), further solidifying his reputation in the transportation sector.
With his new role at NRC, stakeholders anticipate reforms and strategic improvements in the nation’s rail transport system.
