Everton agree deal to sign Jarrad Branthwaite replacement

Jarrad Branthwaite

Everton has reached an agreement in principle with Lyon for the transfer of centre-back Jake O’Brien, as reported by Fabrizio Romano.

Throughout the summer, the Toffees have been seeking a new defender, especially given the uncertain future of their star player Jarrad Branthwaite, who has attracted interest from Manchester United.

O’Brien, who joined Lyon from Crystal Palace in 2023 for £1 million, has quickly made an impression in Ligue 1, drawing the attention of several Premier League clubs.

Renowned for his aerial abilities and physical presence, the Republic of Ireland international is expected to seamlessly integrate into Sean Dyche’s system at Everton.

O’Brien has agreed to a five-year contract with the Merseyside club, although his medical examination might be delayed until Monday (29 July) to finalise the paperwork.

O’Brien a potential Branthwaite replacement

As per reports, one reason behind O’Brien’s acquisition is the ongoing uncertainty regarding Branthwaite’s future.

Everton has already turned down two offers from United for Branthwaite earlier in the transfer window.

With the collapse of the Friedkin Group’s takeover, concerns about Everton’s financial situation have resurfaced.

There is apprehension that the club might need to sell another key player, especially after Amadou Onana’s £50 million move to Aston Villa.

Despite these financial concerns, Everton maintains that they do not intend to lower their valuation of £70 million-plus for Branthwaite.

They hope that a potential takeover by Kevin Malone could alleviate their financial challenges.

Branthwaite has expressed his dissatisfaction by refusing to sign a new contract unless it matches United’s offer of £160,000 per week, as reported by Mail Sport via centredevils.

Given this scenario, O’Brien might be seen as a potential replacement or cover if Branthwaite moves to United.

Erik ten Hag, who values a left-footed centre-back, might make a last-minute attempt to acquire Branthwaite, forcing Everton to reconsider their valuation.

O’Brien’s signing might provide some relief for United fans, as Everton might become more open to negotiations, although O’Brien is right-footed, a factor that matters less to Sean Dyche compared to Ten Hag.

The situation remains speculative, and only time will reveal the outcome.
