ETUNG LGA CELEBRATES HER NEW YAM FESTIVAL IN GRAND STYLE.

Etung Local Government Area is in the Central Senatorial District of Cross River State and was carved out from the former Ikom Local Government Area in 1996. The headquarters is at Effraya.


It has a land mass of 833.07 square kilometers, and shares an international boundary with the Republic of Cameroon to the East. It is bounded in the North by the Ikom Local Government in the south by Obubra and Akamkpa local Government Areas. In addition, Etung has 16 clans and over 300 villages.

Blessed with abundant human and agricultural resources such as cocoa, plantain, cassava oil palm, maize, coconut palm, maize, coconut palm banana, cocoyam, okro cucumber, pumpkin and yam, Etung is predominantly an agricultural area with arable fertile land. It is the highest producer of cocoa in the state and second in the country, which made it imperative for the establishment of the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) at Ajassor, Etung LGA and His Excellency Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade’s initiative in building a mega Cocoa processing plant to add value to the produce.

The new yam festival for this year, 2017 was a spectacle to behold with cultural displays from various wards and clans.

The showcase of the core rich contents of Etung culture, well appreciated by visitors who made it to the event.

The ceremony which was formally lunched to kick off by the Paramount leader of ETUNG, His Royal Majesty Dr. Ntufam Oru Ojong had in attendance, His Excellency Sen. Prof. Ben Ayade ably represented by the Chief of Staff CRSG Hon. Martin Orim, House of Representative member for Etung/Obubra Hon. Mike Etaba, Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Comr. Asu Okang, Special Adviser Inter-Govermental Barr. Chris Njah and a parade of other State Government Appointees, traditional heads, family heads etc.
Awards were Presented to erudite and illustrious sons and daughters of the Etung Nation for their outstanding performance bother in business and leadership capacity.
High point of the event was the cash awards given to the most performing cultural ward with price rang of N50,000 for first position, N25,000 and N15,000 respectively for both second and third positions.
The age long tradition is very symbolic to the Etung people as it marks good fortune and good harvest.
This is an event of Saturday 9th September, 2017 held at the Effraya Square, ETUNG LGA.
