A boat carrying 26 passengers capsized on the Tekeze river in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, resulting in a devastating loss of life.

This disaster happened on Saturday when the boat was taking passengers to a funeral across the Tekeze river, which runs along Ethiopia’s border with Eritrea.

At least 19 people have been confirmed dead, with several others injured.

Local authorities and emergency services responded quickly to the scene, with survivors being rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. A severely wounded child is among those receiving medical attention.

Preliminary reports suggest a flash flood, triggered by heavy rainfall in the region, caused the boat to sink. An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
