Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, England’s joint most successful club have been on a downward spiral.
David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were all given the chance to help the club get back to the level they once were, but could not succeed.
A few trophies were secured in that spell, as the Dutchman won the FA Cup in 2016, whilst the ex-Chelsea boss helped the Red Devils win the League Cup and Europa League in 2017.
But in the Premier League, the story has been far different.
In the last nine seasons, the club have only finished inside the Champions League places four times, and face an up-hill battle to make it on a fifth occasion.
Remarkably too, since the last time they lifted silverware, they have spent over half a billion pounds on players.

A lot has to be done, both on and off the pitch, and Ten Hag will hope he is capable of achieving the task that his predecessors could not.
And given his record with Ajax since December 2017, the numbers make excellent reading for Man United fans.
He’s managed 210 games across all competitions, with that number set to end at 215, Squawka say.
And of those matches so far, he’s recorded an incredibly 155 wins, giving him a success rate of 74 per cent.
