Erik ten Hag was relieved of his duties as Manchester United manager on Monday, with Ruben Amorim set to succeed him imminently.
Under the Dutchman last season, United scored their third-fewest goals in a single Premier League campaign with 57.
Despite the two striker signings of Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee, the Red Devils have struggled in front of goal again this term, scoring just eight league goals in nine games.
It has now been revealed that Ten Hag wanted to add another forward to his arsenal but no concrete offer was made.

The Athletic report that Ten Hag wanted to sign former United striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton in the summer.
As Anthony Martial left the club as a free agent, the Dutch manager wanted an experienced replacement up front.
Welbeck is known to be an exceptional athlete, ranking among the top performers in Brighton’s physical tests.
Ten Hag wanted to bring the 33-year-old’s professionalism to Old Trafford as an example to his young forward line.
However, with the board uncertain about his future, they decided to not fulfill the manager’s request, as they did not want to make signings catered to his desires.

In hindsight, United may regret this decision, as Danny Welbeck has started this season off to a flyer, with six league goals in nine games.
He has also scored more goals against United than any other former player in the Premier League.
Welbeck was born in Manchester and joined their academy at 11 years old.
He made 142 first team appearances for the Red Devils before being sold to Arsenal in 2014.
