Environment Commissioner visit to Flour Mills, picks on environmental polution

CALABAR: The Cross River State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Moses Osogi, Tuesday, embarked on a familiarization/compliance monitoring visit to Niger Mills and Eastern Premier Feeds in Calabar.
Speaking during the visit, Hon. Osogi disclosed that the visit was necessitated by the need to ascertain the companies’ level of compliance to Environmental quality control and standards while also serving as familiarization tour of the facilities. 
While intimating his host of  the core mandate of his Ministry which includes among others; to checkmate environmental activities especially those that are detrimental to both the environment and human health, Hon. Moses Osogi called for the adoption of a cleaner production environment  with improved technologies in line with global best practices.
He informed them that his office has been inundated with a series of complaints arising from members of the public about their production activities  and cautioned them to prioritize safety of the public within the catchment area of their production by correcting all forms of environmental anomalies while warming against untreated effluent and air pollution.
Responding, the General Manager Niger Mills Calabar Mr. Gregory Ehimhen described Niger Mills Company as the largest food and agro allied company in Nigeria  and promised an improved collaboration with the Ministry of Environment .
Speaking further, the General  maintained  that productions and other activities carried out at the factories are  in line with global best practices.
 Mr. Gregory Ehimhen thanked the commissioner and his team for his Visit and restated the company’s readiness to cooperate with the state in protecting its operational environment.
He stated that Niger Mills Calabar, has consistently been interfacing with Environmental regulatory bodies who visit the facility for periodic audit of their activities and assured the Commissioner of  strict compliance to the state’s environmental regulations.
The Commissioner was accompanied on the visit by the permanent secretary Ministry of Environment, Barr. Mrs. Rosemary Onah, and other top management staff of the Ministry
