Duties and Responsibilities
Support for Developing Water Balance Plans:
- Collaborate on the development of national and regional water balance plans.
- Assist in assessing water availability, allocation, and distribution.
Water Resources Yield and Planning Analysis:
- Conduct analysis to determine water resources yield and plan for sustainable utilization.
- Evaluate water availability for various uses.
Catchment Hydrology Assessments:
- Perform catchment hydrology assessments, including rainfall-runoff modeling.
- Understand and quantify surface and groundwater interactions.
Design Flood Hydrology:
- Develop design flood hydrology models.
- Assess flood risk and design appropriate mitigation measures.
Hydraulic Modeling:
- Utilize hydraulic models to analyse water flow, flood routing, and drainage systems.
- Optimize stormwater management infrastructure.
Conceptual Design and Sizing of Stormwater Infrastructure:
- Create conceptual designs for stormwater infrastructure.
- Size stormwater conveyance systems and storage facilities.
Flood Risk Assessment and Flood Line Determination:
- Evaluate flood risk in various scenarios.
- Determine flood lines and floodplain boundaries.
Water and Salt Balances:
- Calculate water and salt balances for specific catchments.
- Understand the movement and distribution of water within the system.
Scientific Report Writing:
- Prepare comprehensive scientific reports related to hydrological studies and findings.
Qualifications
- BSc Eng (Civil) or BSc Hydrology (Hons): A relevant engineering or hydrology degree.
- Professional Registration: Current registration as a Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat) or plans to register as a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) within the next 3 years.
Experience
- Modeling Systems and GIS:
- Proficient in using typical modeling systems (ACRU, Pitman, PC SWMM, WRYM, WRPM, HEC-RAS, GoldSim, WEAP, SWAT, Mike modeling, and DSS tools) and GIS for water-related assessments.
- Hydrological Modeling and Planning: Demonstrated experience in hydrological modeling, water resources planning, flood determination, and water balance analysis.
Skills
- Hydrological Modeling: Proficient in using typical modeling systems used in South Africa, including ACRU, Pitman, PC SWMM, WRYM, WRPM, HEC-RAS, GoldSim, WEAP, SWAT, Mike modeling, and DSS tools.
- GIS (Geographic Information Systems): Skilled in utilizing GIS for water-related assessments and planning.
- Scientific Report Writing: Experienced in preparing comprehensive scientific reports related to water resources and hydrology.
- Water Resource Planning and Modeling: Demonstrated track record in water resource planning, modeling, and reporting.
- Flood Determination and Risk Assessment: Competent in assessing flood risk and determining flood lines.
- Water Balance Analysis: Capable of supporting the development of national and regional water balance plans.
Competencies
- Professional Registration: Holds or plans to register as a Professional Natural Scientist (Pr.Sci.Nat) or Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) within the next 3 years.
- Multidisciplinary Studies: Experience in multidisciplinary water-related studies, including national and regional water planning studies and individual water infrastructure project feasibility studies.
- Climate Change Assessment: Familiarity with assessing potential impacts of climate change on water resources and supply.
- Hydraulic Design: Proficient in designing drainage structures.
- Water Quality Analysis: Knowledge of water quality analysis for mining and industrial clients.
- Capacity Building and Training: Skilled in training and capacity building.
- Hydro-Informatics Systems: Involved in the development of hydro-informatics systems and hydrological databases.
- Hydrological Gauging Networks: Experience in designing and implementing hydrological gauging networks.
