Emirate Tussle: Heavy Security Presence As Police Back Court Order Halting Reinstatement Of Sanusi II As Emir

The Kano State Government House and both palaces where claimants of the Kano emirate stool is currently staying have been surrounded by soldiers, operatives of the police, Department of State Service (DSS) and other security agencies following the ongoing royal tussle in the state.

The development followed the stance of the Kano State Police Command, pledging to execute a court order restraining the Kano State Government from recognising Muhammadu Sanusi II as the substantive emir of Kano.

Although not restraining the free movement within the precinct of the government house, the security operatives were seen to have been positioned in strategic places.

Also, top security operatives who earlier met with the deposed Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, are currently inside the government house holding another meeting.

The place where Sanusi II is staying has also been cordoned off to forestall any breakdown of law and order.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf who earlier accompanied the reinstated Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II has continued to remain in the palace to enforce the reinstatement.

The police had expressed plans to comply with a court order restraining the state government from reinstating Sanusi II as the emir.

The order was granted on Friday before Sanusi II was issued his letter of reinstatement.

The police disclosed this amid palpable tension surrounding the implementation of the repealed law of the Kano Emirate Council that consequently witnessed the dethronement of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and others.

While others have accepted their fate and moved on, Bayero, said to be urged on by “federal might” according to the Kano State deputy governor is laying claim to the stool, forcing the state governor to direct the police to effect his arrest on Saturday.

Recall the Federal High Court in Kano, on Thursday, issued an ex-parte order restraining Governor Abba Yusuf from reinstating Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The governor had ignored the order on the ground that Justice Mohammed Liman issued the order from the United State.

The police while reacting to the situation said it was collaborating with the other security agencies to enforce the demands of the court.

The information contained in a statement read: “Therefore, we are calling on members of the public to know that the Police in the State is working together with the military and other security agencies and are with full capacity for providing the adequate security to everyone as we are committed to carrying out our statutory duties as provided by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Therefore, as the Police Command is leading other security agencies to sustain the peace and peaceful coexistence for overriding interests, miscreants should stay clear of violence in all its ramifications and should not take advantage or hijack the current situation to launch unprovoked attack on people, property and infrastructure of the State.

“Any person found with such a tendency will be ruthlessly dealt with according to the law of the land.”

The command further called for calm while enjoining the residents to keep cooperating with security agencies pending the review of the matter by the court on June 3.
