Two rounds of storms possible Wednesday, another Saturday night

The Covington County Emergency Management Agency is keeping a close eye on developing weather fronts that have the potential to bring severe weather across the region.

As of Tuesday morning, EMA officials are expecting two rounds of storms on Wednesday, one in the morning and another in the evening hours. At the time of the report, these storms are expected to be most severe in southwest Alabama and southeast Mississippi. Covington County lies in the “marginal” area, meaning there is a smaller risk of a severe weather impact.

The first round of the storm is expected to travel into the area from about 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday and the second round will travel through areas west of I-65 from about 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. while those to the east of the interstate would be impacted from midnight to about 5 a.m.

The National Weather Service in Pensacola and Mobile reported that the storms could bring wind gusts up to 60 miles per hours with a few tornadoes, especially in those areas in the far-southwest portion of the state.

Another storm being tracked could make its way into the area Saturday night through Sunday morning, bringing with it severe storms and possible tornadoes, according to the NWS. While the entire southwest area of Alabama, including Covington County, are in the “slight” forecast area, officials are continuing to monitor the path and strength of the storm. A slight risk typically refers to a scattered risk of severe storms that are short-lived and not widespread
