Billionaire and world richest man Elon Musk has been vocal on Twitter about Disney’s copyright laws and how they are absurdly protecting the extension of the Mickey Mouse ownership.
Mickey Mouse Copyrighting laws
The Tesla CEO used his recently acquired Twitter platform to state that “Current copyright law, in general, goes absurdly far beyond protecting the original creator,”
With this being stated, he is currently supporting US Sen Josh Hawley’s law that would create a restriction on the company’s protection over the usage of the Mickey Mouse mascot.
DMCA is “a plague on humanity”
Although there is no clear answer to why he is supporting the Republican Senator, He also stated that the Digital Millennium Copyright Act is “is a plague on humanity”
In 1998 the DMCA was inaugurated as a law and it offers creators of original content on the internet some protections for it not to be distributed over the internet without permission from the owners of the rights for said production.
Seems good so far… but
Some say that it prevents the free flow of information on the web by allowing the intellectual property owners to be able to order the removal of content even if there are no copyright violations whatsoever.
The counter-proposal from the Republican Senator is to have the Copyright Clause Restoration Act, because it can retroactively be activated to Disney’s original copyright of the first introduction of the mascot almost one hundred years ago, in 1928, on the Steamboat Willie animation which had the first protection of 56 years and has been renewed ever since.
