Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Barr. Onome Briggs, has assured that the Governor Monday Okpebholo administration will intensify efforts to enhance the state’s educational system, with a focus on instilling morals.
She stated this during a familiarization visit to some schools in Benin City, the state capital as part of activities to commemorate the 2025 International Education Day.
The SUBEB chairman and her entourage visited the Family Support Programme School in Ikpokpan GRA Benin City and Maria Gorretti Grammar School, Benin City.
The theme of this year’s commemoration “AI for Education” which is aimed at leveraging technology and internet to improve knowledge.
At Family Support Programme School in Ikpokpan GRA Benin City, Barr. Briggs met with staff and pupils of the school, intimating them on the essence of the commemoration.
She identified areas of challenge in the school which include insufficient teachers, just as she inspected conveniences and other facilities.
The SUBEB Chairman also inspected class notes and other educational materials of the pupils, interacted with them on different subject areas and supervised their reading ability.
At Maria Gorretti Grammar School, Barr. Briggs who took turns to interact with students and their teachers also undertook an assessment of academic activities of Junior and Senior Secondary classes.
She also assessed the character boards as part of the state’s education policy on instilling morals, saying there is more to be done to upscale the state’s educational system.
She commended the inclusivity in the school with Persons with disabilities engaged to handle specialized classes and assured of regular visits to ensure improved standards.
“Today is a special day and I thought to celebrate the day I should embark on familiarization to some schools to see what the students are doing. We have been talking about technology in line with this year’s theme as we are trying to bring Artificial Intelligence (AI) into our school system.
“There is more work to do as we have to visit more schools and improve on what we have seen because Governor Monday Okpebholo is very passionate about the education of every Edo child.
“I thank the teachers for their commitment, dedication and resilience towards building a great educational system in Edo State”, she stated.
Head Teacher, FSP Primary School, Ikpokpan GRA, Mrs Mercy Ajibade lamented the lack of teachers as well as dilapidated infrastructure.
She noted that the school presently has eight teachers with a student population of over three hundred.
