Ed Boon highlights how Mortal Kombat's 1st week viewership numbers outperformed The Batman and Justice League on HBO Max

It might be surprising to some to hear this, but apparently the Mortal Kombat movie (2021) has been HBO Max’s most popular movie in terms of the first week’s viewership numbers. This has been highlighted by Ed Boon, co-creator of the Mortal Kombat series, over on Twitter.

According to the released figures, Mortal Kombat had 4.3 million viewers watch the movie within its first week. The film that came in second place, The Batman, wasn’t too far behind with 4.1 million views within a similar timeframe.

After The Batman, there’s quite a notable drop off in terms of numbers as the Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman 1984 and the Matrix Resurrections had 3.5 million, 3.2 million and 3.2 million respectively within their first weeks.

From here, Dune and Zack Snyder’s Justice League had 2.3 million and 2.2 million views during their respective first weeks. In other words, Mortal Kombat’s first week numbers are almost double that of the Justice League’s for HBO Max.

Regardless of how well the movie was received from critics, it’s difficult to argue against the Mortal Kombat movie’s success. At the box office, it’s made $83.7 million to date.

As of right now, it isn’t officially known what NetherRealm Studios’ next project is but it is rumored to be the next entry in the Mortal Kombat series. If this is the case, it would make sense for NetherRealm Studios to continue riding this wave of momentum for the Mortal Kombat series.

It’s unlikely that this is any sort of clue regarding “Mortal Kombat 12” or “Mortal Kombat X2” from Ed Boon, but you never really know. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
