The latest trailer to drop for SNK’s upcoming Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves was for none other than Terry Bogard, the franchise poster boy and a character we already knew was going to be in the game from the day it was announced. It’s fun to see Terry in action and all, but this trailer didn’t bring a ton of new content to the City of the Wolves discussion… or did it?
The keen eye of Rooflemonger has spotted a good handful of Easter eggs and potential character hints as Terry’s trailer comes with more than initially meets the eye. Continue on to see what was shown and whom these hints might be pointing to.
While we’ve seen Mr. Bogard before in City of the Wolves, this is the first time we’re seeing the updated version of his classic The Freight Express stage. This iconic arena has been included in multiple SNK fighting titles, and sees competitors duke it out on a moving train as it chugs along through a desert.
With both a background and foreground in motion and audience attention honed in primarily on the fighters duking it out, The Freight Express is the perfect place to smuggle in secrets, references, and Easter eggs, and developers have clearly done just that.
Even with all the distractions present you may well have noticed the prominent yellow ducks waddling on the train in a row. These are a direct reference to Duck King, a charismatic character who hasn’t been in a ton of SNK fighters, but has been widely requested by fans.
Are his ducks a direct hint that he’ll be coming to the playable roster, or simply a nostalgic nod for long time fans? The same could be asked of the Mr. Rushmore style mountain that passes by in the stage’s background.
Four different characters appear fairly clearly on the mountain, one character appears in a passing train during the Japanese trailer, and Rooflemonger teases out another potential character or two based on less direct trails of breadcrumbs. See it all in the full video here:
