Mason Greenwood has had a tremendous season back in football on loan to Getafe. Although the Spanish club only managed a midtable finish in the La Liga this season, coming in twelfth, Greenwood’s performances certainly helped the club from ending up closer to relegation.
With 33 appearances throughout the league, scoring eight goals and grabbing six assists, the 22-year-old has certainly found his form again, grabbing two more goals in the Copa del Rey across three matches.
The Englishman was sent out on loan following his return from suspension by Manchester United which began in January 2022 following allegations of attempted rape, assault and coercive and controlling behaviour.
Prior to his suspension, Greenwood’s United career looked promising, making 129 appearances across all competitions, scoring 35 goals and bagging 12 assists.
During this time the United Academy graduate managed to get his first and only for the England squad in the UEFA Nations League against Iceland.
Now returning to United from Spain, reports are coming out on Greenwood’s future in football.
It was announced last week that Greenwood himself has put his £2 million mansion up for rent, which aired suggestions that he no long sees his future at United seen as this was his home when playing for the club.
Adding to this, Getafe posted on X a potentially cryptic clue to their desire to sign the winger who won their Player of the Season award, with an image of the star captioned “See you SOON, blues”.
Now, another major club is being linked to the club in the form of Borussia Dortmund.
The German club came 5th this year in the Bundesliga at the hands of manager Edin Terzic.
Manchester Evening News has reported that Dortmund’s sporting director has refused to engage with any conversations about signing the Englishman from United. This comes on the back of links to signing the winger on a temporary deal.
Sporting director Sebastian Kehl spoke at the Champions League final media day, expressing that all transfer plans are currently on hold, commenting: “Of course we do have our plans for the next season and of course we discuss many scenarios, but nothing for today. Let’s focus, let’s anticipate that match on Saturday and then we’ll see how we move on.”
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has also commented on Greenwood’s future back in February where he alluded to the possibility of the Englishman playing at Old Trafford again, saying “Well, he’s a Manchester United footballer, we’re in charge of football, so the answer is yeah, we have to make a decision, it’s quite clear.”
He continued “There is no decision that’s been made. He’s on loan, obviously. We’ve got one or two footballers we have to deal with that are on our books and we need to make a decision, we’ll do that.”
“But the process will be understand the facts, not the hype, and then try and come to a fair decision on the basis of advice, which basically is he a good guy or not? Could he play sincerely for Manchester United well and we’d be comfortable with it and the fans would be comfortable with it?”
With Greenwood’s contract up at the end of the 2024/25, he has one more season at United, however we may see movement with the young star this summer.
