Dortmund 0 - 2 Bayern: Ancelloti wins Super Cup for Bayern on his debut

Questions were on the tray whether Carlo Ancellotti was the right man to continue with the concrete pillar the Bavarians had built in the past, through Henckes and Guardiola. But with no doubts, the tactician has pull his critics behind after winning his first silverware for the club as they beat their arc rivals 2-0 at Signal Iduna Park. Thanks to goals from Arturo Vidal and Thomas Mueller.

Dortmund dominated much of the match, but failed to make the most of their chances, with Manuel Neuer making a string of saves to deny them. Then, Vidal put Bayern ahead early in the second half, tucking in the rebound after Roman Burki had saved his initial shot. Thomas Muller, who failed to score for Germany at last month’s European championships, grabbed the second.

The victory breaks Bayern’s run of four straight defeats to claim their first German Super Cup title since 2012 — a trophy Guardiola never won with Munich. This was the eighth time Bayern and Dortmund have met in a final in the last four years. Bayern have now won four of the showdowns, including May’s German Cup final, which Munich won on penalties to sign off Guardiola’s three-years with the league and cup double.

Dortmund beat Bayern in the 2013 and 2014 Supercups, but could not find an equaliser to Vidal despite plenty of pressure and Muller tucked in the decisive second goal 11 minutes from time.

There was one downside for Bayern, however, as Vidal limped off with an injury during the second half.

With less than a fortnight to go until Bayern open the new Bundesliga season at home to Werder Bremen on August 26, Munich will be chasing a fifth straight crown.
