Each day marks a day closer to Ruben Amorim’s official start day of 11th November 2024, with former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov ow weighing in on the club’s new appointment.
Berbatov spent four years at Old Trafford between 2008 and 2012, having established himself as a top striker at the club.
In this time, the Bulgaria international grabbed 56 goals and 26 assists in 149 games, helping the to win two Premier League titles, two English League Cups, two community shields and a FIFA Club World Cup, even winning a Golden Boot in the Premier League.

Now, Berbatov has become the latest in a run of former players to comment on the role that Amorim is set to take on.
Dimitar Berbatov comments on Ruben Amorim’s appointment at Old Trafford
Speaking to Sky Sports about Amorim’s new role, Berbatov commented: “I think the first thing is probably doing right now is assessing what type of players he’s going to have at United.
He continued: “Are they gonna fit his way of playing? If not, is he going to bring new players? For sure, he’s going to stick with the same system, at least give it a try and see how it works.
“Who are gonna be the wingbacks? This is going to be a problem for United because you need someone who can really go the whole game up and down the pitch.
“Coming into the team, is he going to stick to the system that brought him success in Portugal? Portugal is a good league but Premier League is right up there.
“Does he stick to the system or when he sees the players and go, ‘Okay, we need the points, we need results so we change it a little bit and see what happens’”.
The implications of Amorim’s play style compared to United’s current set up spells trouble for some of the squad.
Firstly, new-boy Joshua Zirkzee may struggle to find a spot in the team, given that he is a very different type of striker to Amorim’s talisman in Viktor Gyokeres.
Also, with several wide players such as Alejandro Garnacho, Amad Diallo, Antony and Marcus Rashford, yet no naturally occurring wide positions in Amorim’s set up, these four may have to learn to adapt to other positions or miss out on game time.
