Yakurr-born Cross Riverian, Obasesam Okoi, who is an academic in Canada has risen to the status of a Caucus Member in his federal constituency. Okoi is a member of the Liberal Party of Canada.

Okoi revealed that he rose to this enviable position by starting from the base of the ladder, working as a volunteer during electioneering period campaigning from door to door for votes for his party. Next, he got involved in the supervision of the counting of casted votes, somebody we would refer to as Party Agent in Nigerian politics.

His party, the Liberal Party of Canada clinched on the Prime Minister seat and a federal member of Parliament. These involvement built trust among Canadian members of his party so much so that Honourable Terry of his Federal Constituency took keen interest in Okoi an ensured he seats as a Caucus Member in the Liberal Party of Canada.

In Canadian politics, a Caucus, which refer to a closed meeting, is intended to focus on particular political causes or party issues. So, as a member of the Caucus of the Liberal Party of Canada, Okoi will be privy to closed meetings bordering on ideology delineation, party strategy, etc of his party.

Read excerpt of Okoi's own words:

Became a Caucus Member of the Liberal Party of Canada in my federal constituency.

I started as a volunteer, going door-to-door to canvass for votes. Then I supervised all the counting. We delivered the Prime Minister. And we delivered a federal Member of Parliament. Am now a Caucus Member.

Trust is built not on wishful thinking but through community service. I am learning civilized politics. The Tortoise may be slow in its journey but it always arrives at its destination.

Thanks to Honorable Terry, for your confidence in me.

Interestingly, Okoi labels Canadian politics 'civilised politics' for obvious reasons especially when his native Nigeria's so called nascent democracy is brought into question. Congratulations Obasesam Okoi!
