Depp vs. Heard trial is causing male domestic violence survivors to speak up

The Johnny Depp versus Amber Heard case is moving on.

On the last days of the month, we will witness the last sessions of the jury.

Johnny Depp argues that he was a victim of Hear’s abusive conduct. During the trial, several men publicly denounced and shared their experiences with abusive women.

They believe that Depp’s lawsuit is a pivotal change for all male survivors.

Johnny Depp recognized in court that he is a male survivor.

In the first days of the trial, the jury and the judge listened to an audio recording where Amber Heard challenged Depp to recognize he was a domestic violence survivor.

“Tell people it was a fair fight and see what the jury and judge think,” Heard said.

“Tell the world, Johnny. Tell them, ‘I, Johnny Depp, I’m a victim too of domestic violence, and it was a fair fight,’ and see if people believe or side with you.”

Depp testified that he was a survivor of domestic violence abuse. He told the courtroom, “Yes. I am.”

Male survivors spoke up

There is no doubt in the statistics that the vast majority of domestic abusers are male counterparts.

However, male survivors used the trial to speak up about their negative experiences.

“When I initially heard [about the case], I was a little shocked. I was like, ‘Wow. Who would’ve thought this could happen to Johnny Depp?'” said Tony Enos, one of the victims of domestic violence.

“The awareness is everything,” Enos said. “Men can be survivors of [domestic violence] and interpersonal violence, too.”

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, one in four men suffers from domestic violence. And one in three women suffers from domestic violence.

Nevertheless, one in four women experiences severe violence. Meanwhile, one out of seven men undergoes the same mistreatment.
