The Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) has lauded Cross River State Governor, Sen. Bassey Otu, for his swift response in addressing critical erosion and landslide sites across Calabar metropolis NEGROIDHAVEN has garnered.
The commendation came against the backdrop of the 12th June Democracy Day celebration, during an inspection tour by NEWMAP officials and journalists to three recently rehabilitated sites: the reinforced drainage wall at Elijah Henshaw, the stabilized landslide at Marina Beach, and the gully erosion control at Nasarawa Road.
Governor’s Prompt Action Saved Communities – NEWMAP
Prof. Emmanuel Eyo, Cross River State NEWMAP Project Coordinator, praised Governor Otu for prioritizing environmental safety, particularly during the rainy season.
“We are grateful for His Excellency’s urgent intervention. These sites posed severe threats to residents, but today, thanks to the governor’s directive, over 11 communities can move safely. We are monitoring other vulnerable areas and will take proactive steps to prevent further disasters,” Prof. Eyo stated.
He further revealed that NEWMAP would return after heavy rains to reinforce weakened sections with grass planting and additional drainage work.
Community Leader Hails Governor’s Efforts
Alhaji Sarki Alhaji Sani Baba Gombe, Head of the Hausa Community in Nasarawa, Calabar, expressed relief over the intervention, recalling how the erosion had previously rendered the road impassable.
“Every day, we thank Allah and Governor Otu for this lifeline. Without his action, this road would have collapsed entirely, cutting off our people. We also appreciate his visit after the Bogobiri fire outbreak—he listens to our cries,” Gombe said.
He appealed for further intervention in other erosion-prone areas, including near the community’s slaughterhouse, where several homes have been lost. Prof. Eyo assured that NEWMAP would assess the site and escalate the request to the governor.
Democracy Day Felicitations
Speaking on the sidelines of Nigeria’s Democracy Day celebrations, Prof. Eyo extended NEWMAP’s goodwill to Governor Otu, describing the projects as “a testament to responsive governance.”
“The governor’s commitment to environmental sustainability aligns with NEWMAP’s mandate. We urge continued collaboration to safeguard Cross River’s landscape,” he added.
The rehabilitated sites at Elijah Henshaw, Marina Beach, and Nasarawa Road now stand as key examples of disaster mitigation, with NEWMAP pledging sustained efforts to combat erosion in Cross River State.
