Delta nursing school queries student for sharing song against Remi Tinubu on social media

The Delta State College of Nursing Sciences has threatened to sanction a student nurse identified as Osato Edobor, for allegedly recording a video during the visit of First Lady, Remi Tinubu, where students disagreed with a song raised by the master of ceremony calling the President’s wife as their ‘mummy’ and posting the video on social media.

The event was part of the Renewed Hope Initiative Health Programme, where 10,000 professional kits were distributed to midwives in the South-South geopolitical zone.

In the video which went viral shortly after it was posted on social media, the MC had introduced Mrs. Tinubu as “everyone’s mother,” but the students who responded in unison, sang “Na your mama be this,” which means (She is your mother), refusing to accept the First Lady as their mother.

In the disciplinary query issued to Edobor on Friday, the institution frowned at the audacity of the student to record the incident and go on to share it on various social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X (formerly Twitter).

In the query which was signed by the institution’s Provost, Evbodaghe Rita Ogonne, and dated March 27, 2025, Edobor is accused of engaging in a “malicious act” by recording herself singing and posting an “unofficial response” to a song during the First Lady’s arrival at the Dome Event Centre in Asaba.

“This is a punishable offence as enshrined in the Student Handbook under standardised disciplinary action for some punishable offences No. 8, Page 21,” the query stated.

It further directed Edobor to submit a written explanation in triplicate copies within 24 hours, justifying why disciplinary action should not be taken against her.

The disciplinary query issued to the student has sparked widespread reactions with human rights activists and lawyers including Omoyele Sowore, Deji Adeyanju and Inibehe Effiong vowing to take up the case in defence of the student in the case of victimization against her.

In a post on his X handle, Sowore said:

“The audacious nursing school students who suitably rejected @officialabat’s wife Remi Tinubu in that “Na Your Mama Be This” song ought to be celebrated, but as is characteristic of this Tinubu repressive era, one of them is being targeted for sharing this charming rendition on her TikTok page.

“We will be providing backing to this lady with all our physical and legal might to ensure the authorities at Delta State College of Nursing Sciences do not perpetrate this egregious act of injustice, as an injury to one is an injury to all.”

On his part, Effiong wrote:

“The fact that the School of Nursing would even contemplate this is astonishing and scandalous.”

Also condemning the school, Adeyanju wrote on his Facebook page:

“This madness has to stop and this is a clear warning to the Delta State College of Nursing to get ready for all of us if they do not withdraw this insult.”
