Lebanese Health Ministry, on Monday, said the 13-month conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has killed more than 3,000 people in Lebanon.
The number is, however, set to rise as Israel continues new operations targeting Hezbollah infrastructure across Lebanon and in parts of Syria while Hezbollah continues to launch dozens of rockets into northern Israel.
The attacks started after Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel the day after Hamas’ brutal attack in Israel on October 7, 2023, which also ignited the war in Gaza.
The conflict which has continued for over a year escalated on September 23, 2024, with Israeli airstrikes on south and east Lebanon as well as Beirut’s southern suburbs, leaving hundreds dead and leading to the displacement of nearly 1.2 million people.
Israel also initiated a ground invasion in early October to dismantle Hezbollah’s border infrastructure, including tunnel systems.
Hezbollah responded by continuing rocket attacks into northern Israel, where 72 Israeli casualties have been reported, among them both civilians and military personnel.
The humanitarian crisis is worsening with over a million displaced within Lebanon and more than 60,000 people in Israel displaced from border areas.
Additionally, Israel’s recent move to end its cooperation with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), the main aid provider in Gaza, has raised concerns about the delivery of essential services in Gaza.
International aid organisations said the legislation, set to take full effect in a few months, could impact aid coordination and worsen Gaza’s humanitarian conditions.
