Mason Greenwood’s future has been very much uncertain as to which team he’ll be representing next.
In the last few weeks it seemed as though a Serie A move would be most likely with Lazio, Juventus and Napoli all fighting it out for the winger.
Juventus have been the front runners for the young star’s signature over the last few weeks, with personal terms supposedly agreed between Greenwood’s representatives and The Old Lady. The only issue appeared to be his valuation of £30 million, with Juve looking to offer a player-plus-cash deal to lower the transfer fee including Samuel Illing-Junior.
However, out of nowhere, Lazio swept as long term fans of Greenwood, placing the full asking price of £30 million on the table, having missed out on the Englishman before with Greenwood choosing a loan spell with Getafe over the same deal with Lazio.
Ultimately, Greenwood’s choice to go to Getafe was a good one, with the star grabbing ten goals in 36 appearances for the Spanish club, earning him the team’s Player of the Season award. This successful return to football after his suspension at United has ramped up interest in the winger from across Europe, seemingly getting the 22-year-old’s career back on track.
Now, reports from David Ornstein at The Athletic claim that French club Marseille are exploring the possibility of signing the 22-year-old.
After coming eighth in Ligue 1 this year, missing out on European football for the first time in five years, usually finishing within the top five, OM are looking to strengthen their squad for a better campaign next year.
Manager Jean-Louis Gasset, who has only been in charge at Orange Velodrome since February is set to be replaced with Brighton & Hove Albion’s recent man in charge, Roberto De Zerbi, one of the shortlisted few considered to replace Erik ten Hag if United were to part ways with the Dutchman at the end of the Season.
Whilst the interest in Greenwood is at an early stage, with finances yet to be discussed between the two clubs, the Ligue 1 side have reportedly held conversations with the winger who is believed to prefer a move to France over his other current options.
