During one of BST|Daigo Umehara’s streams, Daigo messaged about his thoughts regarding Modern Controls. The individual that sent this message was apparently frustrated by how simple Modern Controls have made things in Street Fighter 6.
In response to this, Daigo actually praised Capcom for this “reform.” What Daigo means by this is that it’s caused the least amount of turmoil for experienced players while also catering to beginners.
“The advent of Modern [Controls] is the most successful reform the history of Street Fighter,” declared Daigo. “It’s brought in new players. I’ve never seen something in so many new players without also garnering complaints from the top players.”
Leading up to this statement, Daigo talked about what he’s seen from Capcom’s fighting games since Street Fighter 2. Capcom has a history of changing up the formula of fighting games to keep things fresh, and to give beginners a chance against experienced fighting game players.
Daigo states that if there were never any reforms going from one version of a fighting game to another, then only the hardcore players would play it until they got bored. Needless to say, this would result in the game’s playerbase abandoning the game before too long.
While Daigo acknowledges that there are some players that don’t appreciate the existence of Modern Controls (such as the user that messaged him), he notes that this is only a small subset of players. Check it all out in the video below:
