Two Mobile Police (MOPOL) in Calabar have been arrested over the death of their colleague who was hacked to death last month by miscreants allegedly hired by a rival community in a land tussle.
According to reports by CrossRiverWatch, the mobile policeman was killed by thugs while he and two of his colleagues were providing cover for members of a rival community who were working on the disputed land.
While the thugs invaded the site with cutlasses, cudgels and other weapons and pounced on one of the mopol, eyewitnesses say his two colleagues ran away leaving the thugs to hack him to death and run away with his weapon, an AK47 rifle.
In their statements which was also sighted, the duo claimed that when the thugs attacked them, they “shot at the thugs repeatedly but the bullets did not penetrate” while the thugs kept approaching them which is why they had to run.
A top police source who spoke to our correspondent under anonymity said: “The two mopol exemplify cowardice. They claim that they were shooting at the thugs and the bullets did not penetrate. What nonsense is that?
“Unfortunately, our bosses believe them and think they should be set free after leaving their colleague to die just like that. I think the only reason they are still holding them is because of the weapon that the criminals ran away with. Our detectives are on the trail of the criminals to see how we can recover the weapon.”
