To ensure effective wastes management within the state capital, Cross River government has deployed to some locations within Calabar metropolis the waste receptacles donated to it by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) for refuse collection and evacuation.
Recall that in February 2024, Rt. Hon. Orok Duke, Cross River NDDC representative, on behalf of the Commission, handed over 13 waste bins to the state government as part of effort to support Governor Bassey Otu’s drive towards returning the state to its once enviable status of being the cleanest in Nigeria.
Duke had at the time stated that the 13 waste bins were the first batch of a total of 300 dumpsters the interventionist agency would deliver to the state.
“I wrote to the head office and requested for 300 dumpsters to be delivered to the state. My request was approved; that is how these bins got here.
“Only 13 bins have so far been delivered in the first batch while the remaining 287 will be delivered subsequently.
“We have seen that Governor Bassey Otu is poised at returning Cross River State clean and green status so we decided to support the sanitation programme with these waste bins,” he said.
Meanwhile, the waste receptacles have recently been put to use as residents are now dumping their refuse into them for prompt evacuation by the concerned authorities.
When the remaining ones arrive, they are likely to be distributed across urban centers in the state such as Ugep, Ikom, Ogoja, Obudu, among others.
