CALABAR – In its determined efforts to ensure a flood-free State, the Cross River State Government has heightened the desilting of blocked drainages and the evacuation of generated waste in Calabar, the State capital.
Speaking to pressmen while monitoring the exercise in some parts of the Calabar Metropolis, the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Moses Osogi stated that continuous sanitation culture in the State capital is a holistic approach to ensuring a healthy and habitable environment.
He explained that the Ministry of Environment would continue to carry out regular desilting of blocked drainages to curb flooding.
Commissioner Osogi said as a responsible and proactive Government, the present administration led by Governor Prince Bassey Otu, the Ministry of Environment would actively carry out major interventions that are geared towards maintaining a clean, Serene and green Environment, emphasizing that everyone has a part to play in making the city clean,
The Environment Boss warned residents to desist from dumping refuse in unauthorised places, stating that flood and erosion challenges experienced in parts of the metropolis are due to indiscriminate disposal of waste.
Speaking on the level of preparedness for the general sanitation proposed to be held every last Saturday of the month, Commissioner Osogi called on corporate bodies and individuals to cooperate with the State Government in ensuring that the policy is adhered to for maximum results and announced that the exercise which would start from 7 am to 12noon would be executed by security agencies as there would be no vehicular or human movement except for those who are on essential duties.
