Criminal Complaint Opened Against Turkish Popstar for Religious Reference

01/27/2022 Turkey (International Christian Concern) – Turkish authorities are criticizing and boycotting popstar Sezen Aksu for a five-year-old song that references Adam and Eve. Aksu shared a clip of her song to wish everyone a new year, inciting the recent controversy. An official criminal complaint was filed against Aksu for “making derogatory statements about Adam and Eve in a way that may cause public outrage”.

The lyrics go, “Pleasure and pain, plans and games, standing tall or hitting the bottom, it is wonderful to be alive. Here we are, on a rollercoaster, heading straight to disaster, just say hi to Adam and Eve, those ignorants.” Turkish Islamists and authorities, including the Religious Affairs Directorate (Diyanet), politicians, and the Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK), all condemned Aksu’s song for “disrespect”. Islam considers Adam the first prophet and refers to him and Eve with the religious honorific titles Hz. Adem and Hz. Havva.

The Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan himself commented on the situation with Aksu saying, “No one can defame his holiness, Adam. It is our duty, when the time comes, to rip out the tongues of those who defame him. No one can defame her holiness Eve.” He later amended his statement that it was not targeted at Aksu directly but as a general observance towards those who defame Islam’s prophets.

After RTÜK pressured Turkish stations to not play the song, the president commented, “We don’t have the power to stop channels [from televising the song], but the song is under investigation. If it is determined that the lyrics are derogatory, then any television channel that aired the song will be penalized. We only issued an advance warning to the channels so they don’t have to face the consequences later.”
