Super Smash Bros. celebrated its 25th anniversary this year with the series now spanning five mainline titles and having included almost 100 characters from Nintendo and just about everyone else in total.
But what happens if you were to try and rank every single version of every character that’s appeared in Smash Bros. between the Nintendo 64, Melee, Brawl, Wii U and Ultimate? Well, you get this wild tier list.
Pro Smash player LG|Marss recently undertook the crazy task of rating all 200+ fighters and variants across the different entries where it’s interesting to see how Captain Falcon fared for example in 64 compared to Smash 4.
The absolute top of the food chain in the list features 19 characters who should probably be familiar faces to anyone who’s spent any amount of time with a particular game’s competitive scene or even just observed it.
There is of course the likes of Smash 4 Bayonetta, Cloud and Diddy Kong plus Melee Fox, Marth and Jigglypuff as well as Brawl Meta Knight and Ultimate’s Steve, but would you expect Sonic to be up there multiple times?
What’s funny is below that is the “Smash 64 characters can KO in 1 hit so whatever” tier that does feature the likes of original Fox, Kirby and Pikachu… but also R.O.B., Kazuya and Smash 4 Ryu because I guess they can technically do that too.
Out of the characters who’ve appeared in at least three Smash games so far, the most consistently strong picks across the series have been Marth, Pikachu, Diddy Kong, Fox and maybe Falco with the likes of Mario, Sheik and Snake being up there too.
This is all through Marss’ perspective of course, so your ratings may vary quite differently from his.
On the flipside of that coin, Smash has seen some pretty consistent stinkers over the past two and a half decades.
All four of Zelda appearances are in the bottom two categories with the first three being at the lowest point possible in “Garbanzo beans” plus unsurprisingly Bowser and Ganondorf too.
Kirby and Jigglypuff have multiple entries in the bottom tier as well, but at least both fighters were “strong” in one of their games though whether that was good for their scenes or not is certainly up for debate.
We’d like to note too that Zelda, Sheik, Pyra and Mythra were rated as separate fighters while Pokémon Trainer is considered a single character in Marss’ list.
This isn’t the only character ranking Marss has been a part of lately either, as he recently worked on a different kind of combined tier list for Smash Ultimate with LG|MkLeo, LG|Tweek, LG|Sonic and LG|Maister too.
It’s not specified whether or not this massive tier list is ordered, but we’re going to assume probably not (or at least not fully).
You can check out the tier list from Marss ranking all 219 Smash Bros. characters below, and let us know how close you think he got with all of his picks.
