The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed, has announced that the rescued NYSC member, Solomon Daniel Bassey, who stayed for one year in terrorists’ captivity would be given an automatic certificate.

Recall that about eight prospective corps members were travelling in an Akwa Ibom Transport Company (AKTC) bus from Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, to Sokoto State, for the one-year mandatory national service, when their vehicle was intercepted by the hoodlums.

The DG who disclosed this while announcing the release of the last corps member who was in captivity during a press briefing on Friday in Abuja, revealed that the victim was moved frequently between different locations by his captors.

He confirmed that the mastermind behind the kidnapping had been killed, though no additional suspects had been apprehended as of now.

“They were not kept in one place. They kept moving from location to location.

“The actual culprit has been killed. He was the one who masterminded. To the best of my knowledge, no suspect was arrested for now.

“He (the rescued corps member) has undergone a service year. He is qualified for a certificate. What more service year than spending a year in the jungle,” he said.

He noted that the NYSC, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, Police, Department of State Services (DSS), and traditional rulers, worked tirelessly to secure the release of the corps members.

He added that the NYSC had also met with the governor of Zamfara State, who played a crucial role in the operation.

“Through the combined effort of the security agencies, especially the Nigerian Army and the NYSC, the mission started yielding results with the rescue of the first set of four prospective Corps members,” he added.

He emphasised the importance of safety for Corps members, urging them to avoid travelling at night.

He reaffirmed that the welfare and security of all NYSC members remain the scheme’s top priority.
