Controller issue seemingly changes outcome of match and causes chaos during Tekken 8 event at DreamHack Dallas 2024

DreamHack Dallas 2024 is the big tournament that’s been happening this weekend. For Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8, this is a particularly important event as DreamHack Dallas 2024 serves as a qualifier event for the Esports World Cup, a major tournament with a $1,000,000 prize pool for both games that’s taking place later this year in Riyadh.

KC|JDCR was a potential favorite to win the whole thing as he was seeded at 17 for the event. He no doubt had a tough match up ahead of him in the top 64 on the winners side upon facing off with PBE|AK, the seed 1 competitor.

While JDCR played as Dragunov, AK was a Shaheen user. At first, it seemed like this was AK’s match to win as he took the first match with a 3-1 victory. Just one more match over JDCR would’ve allowed him to advance.

However, JDCR proved to be resilient as he was able to answer back with a 3-1 victory of his own. This was proving to be an intense set.

The set was so intense that nobody seemed to notice the “Connect this device using a USB cable, or register it again” notification that appeared during the second match. Unfortunately, this notification would prove to be a painful foreshadowing for JDCR.

As it turns out, the PlayStation 5 was detecting the presence of a DualSense wireless controller that was trying to connect via Bluetooth. Essentially, this meant that the PlayStation 5’s Bluetooth settings were still turned on.

JDCR came super close to winning his set over AK. In the third match, he took the next two rounds. However, AK was just able to barely hang on and take two rounds of his own.

In other words, this set had come down to last game and last round. It all came down to the decision making of this final round.

AK was able to score the first hit on this final round, but this ended up being the only hit that he was able to land on JDCR. A couple of combos for JDCR gave him a significant life lead over AK. In fact, he only needed just one more hit to win the set.

Unfortunately, this is when disaster struck. A third, external controller seemingly paused the game by attempting to connect to the PlayStation 5.

Of course, this meant that the tournament organizers had to make a difficult ruling regarding the situation. Ultimately, the rules indicate that the round had to be replayed from the start.

JDCR had seemingly spent all of his mental focus on the round that ended up not counting. As such, AK was able to sweep the round and move on.

A disappointing outcome to be sure. JDCR would later be eliminated at 9th place while AK currently sits in the losers bracket of top 8.

To make up for this situation, the tournament organizers have promised to help JDCR attend future qualifier events, but this has reportedly resulted in them receiving death threats by third parties.

JDCR himself has indicated that he’s disappointed by the outcome, but that he’s ultimately okay. While it’s hard to pinpoint the blame on anybody in particular, there’s certainly a lesson to be learned here.

Here’s hoping that the community can use this negative experience to avoid this situation from coming up again in the future.
