Acting Chief Judge, Akon Bassey Ikpeme has been screened by the State Assembly’s Committee on Judiciary, Public Service Matters, Public Petition and Conflict Resolution for confirmation as the substantive Chief Judge.

Justice Ikpeme’s screening, which held at the Chambers of the Assembly Complex is sequel to Governor Ayade’s request for the Assembly’s confirmation in accordance with the provisions of section 271(1) of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) conveyed in a letter by Barr Tina Agbor, Secretary to the State Government.

The House had earlier deliberated on the request before committing it to the Committee for in-depth study and interaction with the Nominee.

Justice Ikpeme, while answering questions from the Lawmakers assured that she will abide by the oath of office and ensure that Justice is dispensed to all without fear or favour.

She promised to strengthen the Family Courts, forestall delay of cases and sued for synergy between the Judiciary and security agencies in order to tackle the current insecurity prevalent in the State.

Chairman of the Judiciary Committee Rt Hon. Efa Esua (Calabar Municipality) commended Governor Ayade for Ikpeme’s nomination and promised that his Committee will work hard to conclude and present its report to the House soon.

Members observed the robost credentials of the Nominee and urged her to bring her wealth of experience to bear if appointed substantive Chief Judge.

You may recall that, Justice Ikpeme was sworn in as acting Chief Judge on December 3, 2019 following the retirement of Justice Michael Edem.
