Colombia U23 defeated Nigeria U23 2-0 as both teams reach the quarter finals of Rio Olympic

Goals from Gutierrez and Padon at the 4th and 63rd minutes ensures the South Americans qualifies alongside Nigeria who had already topped the group after spectacular wins against Japan and Sweden.

After ensuring top spot in their group, Samson Siasia made five changes to the side that beat Japan and Sweden. The veteran coach rested goalkeeper Emmanuel Daniel for Daniel Akpeyi and handed Kingsley Madu, Saliu Popoola, Aminu Umar and Ndifreke Udo their first starts since the competition started.

It was the Colombians who got off the starting blocks with the better intent as captain Teofilo Gutierrez pounced on a pass from Diego Pabon to knock it past Akpeyi for the opening goal.

Nigeria’s best chance fell to Oghenekaro Etebo in the second half but he scoffed his shot after a pass from Mikel.

Colombia cemented their win late on after Akpeyi brought down Harold Preciado inside the box. The goalkeeper was lucky to get a yellow card for the late challenge on forward. Padon made no mistake as he stepped up to take the penalty kick, shooting an emphatic strike past the goalkeeper for the South American’s second.

Nigeria now face Denmark while Colombia takes on Brazil on their next round of the competition after both teams qualified from their group later on.
