The Dragon Ball franchise has churned out some top tier antagonists over the years, but there’s a reason why Frieza, the Saiyan race’s biggest single hater, has become the series’ most recurring villain.
Few anime characters drip with as much personality as the emperor of Universe 7, and the lasting impression the character has had on fans is thanks in large part to the voice actors behind him. Two such actors, Linda Young and Daman Mills, both attended the recent Rhode Island Anime Con and offered fans a charming Frieza-off, of sorts.
Young was the first American actor to play the role of the iconic villain, so if you grew up watching Dragon Ball Z and recall seeing Goku’s initial Super Saiyan transformation back on Namek, she’s probably your introduction to the character.
It was Chris Ayres who took over Frieza’s English pipes back in 2010, and it was he who voiced the character for the 2017 fighting game community favorite Dragon Ball FighterZ. Daman Mills understudied for Ayres, and would go on to take over the role following Ayres’s tragic passing in late 2021.
If you’ve been watching Dragon Ball Super or plan on getting the upcoming Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO then it’s Mills’s voice you’re hearing behind the DB baddie.
Both actors were in attendance at the recent Rhode Island Anime Con, and took a little time for some fan service as they produced the quick but fun Frieza face off video below:
