Claressa Shields and Savannah Marshall will meet for the undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO middleweight world titles on September 10 at the O2 Arena in London.
The bitter rivals will finally have the opportunity to settle their feud in one of the most anticipated fights in women’s boxing and, on the same night, Mikaela Mayer will face Alycia Baumgardner for the unified WBC, IBF & WBO super-featherweight world titles.
America’s Shields is undoubtedly the more accomplished fighter of the pair.
She won two Olympic gold medals in her early years at London 2012 and Rio 2016, and has since become a three-weight champion as a professional.
In her entire boxing career to date, Shields has only lost one fight when she was an amateur back in 2012.
That defeat came at the hands of Britain’s Marshall and now, a decade later, the pair will finally meet again.
In her pro career thus far, 27-year-old Shields has built a record of 12-0 (2 KOs) and scarcely even been tested by her opposition to date.
She has been undisputed champion at super-welterweight (154lbs), undisputed champion at middleweight (160lbs) and unified champion at super-middleweight (168lbs).
Not long ago though, Shields vacated one of her middleweight belts and so currently stands as the WBA, WBC and IBF champion.
The WBO belt, which she relinquished, was subsequently won by Marshall.
The Brit is also 12-0, but has 10 KOs to her name and is recognised as the hardest puncher in women’s boxing.
A clash of styles with the skilful Shields will prove very interesting indeed.
Also on the UK’s first ever all-female card will be the Mayer vs Baumgardner unification.
The two Americans will bring together three of the four world titles at super-featherweight.
Mayer, a former Olympian, is undefeated at 17-0 as a professional having picked up the IBF and WBO belts.
Baumgardner suffered a defeat earlier in her career, but is now 12-1 and holds the WBC crown after stunning Terri Harper last year.
Having these two fights on the same night will undoubtedly bring further huge attention to the thriving women’s boxing scene, following on from Katie Taylor’s win over Amanda Serrano back in April.
