Quite literally
After 25 years away, Fatal Fury is finally making a comeback, but there’s been a lot of questions about who is going to show up in the new entry and what the future of SNK is going to look like.
With Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui coming to Street Fighter 6 plus the recent reveal of the Capcom Fighting Collection 2, fans are obviously curious about what that could mean for guests in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.
NeoGeoNow recently got to sit down with SNK’s Yasuyuki Oda, Josh Weatherford, and Jonathan Campana where he got to ask some great questions about Fatal Fury, guest characters, additional costumes and future projects.
With last month’s Mai and release date trailers, we got to see the first additional outfit revealed with Terry’s classic attire being offered as pre-order DLC, but what of the rest of the cast?
“We’ll try our best,” responded veteran Producer Oda.
“Obviously, we understand the requests from the fan base for it, and it’s very hard for them to understand that those resources have to come from somewhere,” continued Weatherford. “And there’s still a lot of stuff we’re not even talking about yet that’s still in the works. So it’s just one of those things where there’s always a limit to how much we can create and make sure that it all looks good. The shaders are perfect for each and such. It’s a lot more work than expected.”
They did also show Mai in her original red dress too, which had fans thinking that would be a full-on alternate costume for her too.
But that’s apparently not actually the case at the moment, however, with the developers confirming what we saw in the trailer was connected to her gameplay.
We take that to mean she’ll be temporarily transforming into her classic garb during one or more of her Super animations in CotW.
They did previously show at least that the new Fatal Fury will have a fairly in-depth color editing option, so players can stylize their characters with a wider range of colors and patterns, which we don’t often see in many 2D fighters anymore.
As for the likes of Ryu and Chun-Li visiting South Town, SNK isn’t obviously going to come right out and confirm something that big, but we still got a bit of a funny answer out of the question.
“We’ll try our best,” Oda repeated with a laugh after sitting and making a face for about five seconds or so.
He similarly told fans to “wait and see” if background cameo characters like Raiden could still end up as playable fighters in the future too.
Both Oda and the Street Fighter 6 team have expressed interest in working together more in the future, so their inclusion is certainly not out of the question.
SNK has of course been very open to lending out their characters to other franchises like Tekken, Super Smash Bros., Fighting EX Layer, Soul Calibur and now Street Fighter, but they aren’t strangers in bringing outsiders to their games too.
Although The King of Fighters 15 seems to be concluding without any guests, Samurai Shodown did add Guilty Gear’s Baiken, For Honor’s Warden and Gongsun Li from Honor of Kings before that though they waited until Season 2 to start going crazy with all that.
There’s obviously been a lot of buzz this Summer about the prospects of Capcom vs. SNK 3 now, and bringing some world warriors to Fatal Fury would certainly help bridge the gap.
It is important to point out, however, that this interview took place before the Capcom Fighting Collection 2 announcement that includes the first two CvS titles.
City of the Wolves does have five DLC characters planned for the first season that haven’t been revealed yet on top of the base roster of 17 fighters, so there is a chance we could see a guest or two in there though we’re not putting too much stock into that at the moment.
We’ll just have to wait and see.
Those who pre-order Fatal Fury will receive the Special Edition containing the Season Pass 1 for no additional charge plus three days of early access.
Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is scheduled to release on April 24, 2025 for the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and PC.
We highly recommend checking out NeoGeoNow’s full interview below for a lot more discussion on these and other subjects for Fatal Fury and SNK’s future projects.
