Ajax Amsterdam forward Chuba Akpom is reportedly considering a move to France’s Ligue 1 as he seeks more regular first-team football.
Despite a career that has spanned multiple countries and leagues, Akpom’s current struggles in the Netherlands have prompted him to reevaluate his future.
A Promising Start with Arsenal
Akpom’s journey began at Arsenal, where he rose through the youth ranks and made his senior debut in 2013. However, despite loan spells with several English clubs—including Brentford, Coventry City, Nottingham Forest, Hull City, and Brighton—he found it difficult to establish himself in Arsenal’s first team.
Flourishing Abroad
Seeking greater opportunities, Akpom moved to Greece in 2018, signing with PAOK Thessaloniki. It was there that his career flourished. He became a pivotal figure for the club, scoring the decisive goal in the 2019 Greek Cup Final and playing a significant role in PAOK’s success.
Championship Glory at Middlesbrough
Akpom’s performances in Greece earned him a return to England with Middlesbrough, where he achieved remarkable success. He emerged as the EFL Championship’s top scorer in the 2022–2023 season, netting 28 goals in 40 league appearances. His stellar form earned him the club’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards.

Move to Ajax and Recent Challenges
In August 2023, Akpom joined Ajax on a five-year deal for €12.3 million, potentially rising to €14.3 million with add-ons. He debuted in a goalless draw against Fortuna Sittard and scored his first goal for the club in a 2-0 win over Volendam in November 2023.
However, consistent game time has eluded him in Amsterdam, leading to speculation about a potential move. French club Lille, which expressed interest in signing Akpom during the summer of 2023, could reignite their pursuit.
A New Chapter in Ligue 1?
According to Foot Mercato via Les Transferts, Akpom is open to a Ligue 1 switch. While not as prestigious as the Premier League or La Liga, Ligue 1 has emerged as a haven for players looking to revive their careers.
Having never played in France, Akpom may view the league as an exciting opportunity to rediscover his scoring form and secure regular minutes. With his vast European experience and hunger for opportunities, a move to Ligue 1 could mark the next chapter in Akpom’s diverse and unpredictable career.
