Chelsea news: Reece James injury hands Graham Potter fresh blow as new signing to be announced
Your morning Chelsea digest on Sunday, March 26.
Reece James withdraws from England squad
Reece James has withdrawn from the England squad to take on Ukraine on Sunday evening due to an ‘ongoing issue’ with a minor hamstring injury.
The 23-year-old Chelsea defender has struggled with injury problems all season-long and unfortunately it looks like another setback. James came on in Thursday night’s impressive win against Italy but was only on the pitch for just over five minutes after replacing Bukayo Saka.
England released the following statement on James: “Reece James has withdrawn from the England squad and will not feature against Ukraine on Sunday. The full-back has returned to Chelsea for an assessment on an ongoing issue.
“No replacements are planned as Gareth Southgate’s squad, including the suspended Luke Shaw, continue their preparations at Tottenham Hotspur Training Ground.”

New signing ‘close’
Chelsea are on the verge of making a major addition to their Under-21 set up with the Blues close to signing attacker Alex Matos from Norwich.
The 18-year-old has made 13 Premier League 2 appearances in the second half of the season for Norwich after featuring in eight Under-18 Premier League outings, mostly towards the latter stages of 2022. According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea are very close to signing Matos on a free transfer.
The Italian journalist claims Matos is seen as being a key part of a project set by Jim Fraser, who was promoted to head of youth development and recruitment last month.
Victor Osimhen alternative
A new striker to lead Chelsea’s forward line next season is anticipated to be at the top of Todd Boehly’s summer shopping list.
One player who is reportedly on Boehly’s watchlist is Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani. The French striker only moved to the Bundesliga in the summer after four years with Nantes and has bagged 16 goals in 35 appearances. He also played a part in Les Blues’ run to the World Cup final, scoring in the semi-final win over Morocco.
According to 90min, the 24-year-old has ‘flirted’ with the idea of a move to a bigger club this summer with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich set to battle it out with Chelsea.
Manchester United and Newcastle have also been linked, but the report suggests PSG and Bayern Munich are the two primary locations.
