The much-anticipated 10th edition of the Prince Ukeme Ukpong Unity Cup Competition commenced on Sunday evening at the Comprehensive High School playground in Ikpe Mbak Eyop, Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State .
The opening ceremony, brimming with energy and excitement, marked the beginning of what promises to be an exhilarating tournament and drew cheers and commendation from guests and neutrals who were happy to identify with the consistent innovation powered by the tournament sponsor, Prince Ukeme Ukpong.
The inaugural match showcased a spirited clash between the reigning champions, Nsit Ikpe, and the runners-up from the 9th edition, Uruk Uso.
The crowd was treated to a spectacular display of sportsmanship as both teams took to the field, eliciting cheers and applause from the enthusiastic spectators.
Distinguished guests, including Dr. Mrs Inemesit Uwah, the Wife of the Secretary to the Akwa Ibom State Government, and Lady Blessing Ebong Uko, the Wife of the Honourable Commissioner for Youths Development and Sports, graced the occasion. Hon. Aniebietabasi Akpan, the Transition Chairman of Obot Akara LGA, and other eminent personalities were also in attendance, adding to the grandeur of the event.
The ceremonial kick-off was performed by the energetic Clinton Ebong Uko, representing his father, The Honourable Commissioner for Youths Development and Sports, Sir Monday Ebong Uko.
The opening goal of the tournament was scored by Nsemeke Francis of Nsit Ikpe, who unleashed a spectacular shot from outside the penalty area. However, Uruk Uso swiftly responded, with Nseobong Ekanem leveling the score, resulting in a thrilling 1-1 draw in the inaugural game of the 10th edition.
The event garnered attention from notable personalities such as Hon. John Cleton, the Transition Chairman of Ikot Ekpene LGA, Hon. Unyime Etim, and Lady Agnes Udoengwehen, the Immediate past Executive Chairpersons of Ikot Ekpene and Obot Akara. Personal aides to the Governor and distinguished guests from various states across Nigeria added to the festive atmosphere.
The competition continues on Monday, December 18 [today] at 4 pm, featuring a match between Ikpe Mbak Eyop and Ikpe Usung Ita at the Comprehensive High School in Ikpe Mbak Eyop, Obot Akara Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
