In his first Old Firm game as a manager, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men were overrun in the opening 45 minutes and couldn’t handle the hosts.
The Gers’ new signing, Aaron Ramsey, was watching on from the stands, having signed on loan from Juventus until the end of the season.
Hatate put Celtic ahead with two stunning efforts from outside the box, scoring his second and third goals after a January move from Kawasaki Frontale.
Israeli forward Liel Abada made it three just before half-time, after some shocking defending from the Rangers defence.
Celtic are now top of the Scottish Premiership, overtaking Rangers and leading them by a point.
