March 26 2024 – BALTIMORE, Maryland: At 1:30am the cargo containership, “Dali” out of Singapore crashed into a pillar supporting the Francis Scott Key Bridge and sending it plummeting into Baltimore Harbor. The port of Baltimore is a major US cargo hub, and a key importer of vehicles on the East Coast.
Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg answered questions from the media outside of the Maryland Transportation Dept along the now closed section of 695 leading up to the bridge. The governor of Maryland, Wes Moore, and the mayor of Baltimore also addressed the massive crowd of Media.
President Biden also spoke to reporters today at the White House, saying that the Federal government would pay to reconstruct the bridge and that all evidence points to the disaster being an accident rather than deliberate.
Six construction workers who were reported missing after the collapse were presume dead on Tuesday evening. The US Coast Guard, Maryland State Police, and the Baltimore City Fire Department announced we have shifted from a search and rescue operation to a recovery operation for collapsed bridge. Radio calls released earlier on Tuesday showed that the police were able to slow traffic going into the Francis Scott Key Bridge after the Dali transmitted a mayday call after reportedly losing control of the ship.
As of nightfall, off the shore of Annapolis Maryland, a skyline appeared on the river as the lights of a dozen cargo ships, now denied entry to the Port of Baltimore, are beginning to pile up.
